KIAMBU RUTHLESS ASSASSINS: How 8 Kihiu Mwiri Directors were Killed in Cold Blood between 2001-2015

Directors of the troubled land buying firm, Kihiu Mwiri Farmers Company, have been summoned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for a meeting on Friday July 31, following the killings of two firm directors on Wednesday July 29.
Since 2001, eight directors have perished in mysterious ways in what is believed to be leadership wrangles.
The two directors- Zachariah Chege and Josphat Chege- were riding on a motorbike at around 7:30 AM near Kabati Murang’a county when they were confronted by two men in another motorbike.
On approaching P.K Primary School, one of the two men in the other motorbike drew a gun and shot them severally, killing them instantly.
The incident was witnessed by the many school children who were on their way to school, and were left traumatized.
The attackers fled the scene immediately. Bodies of the deceased were taken to the Bishop Okoye mortuary in Thika Town.


On July 1st, the firm Chairman, Paul Kariuki, was abducted just after leaving his office in Thika Town. he had called his wife telling her that he was leaving and was going home directly. Unfortunately, Mr. Kariuki, did not get home.
His wife tried calling him but the call went straight to voicemail. She decided to reach out to the people he had been with that day but no one knew of her husband’s whereabouts.
His car was found burnt down in Limuru. Since then no one has seen him or heard from him.


On June 28, Paul Kaharu, another director, was shot dead as he walked to his car at Majengo Estate Thika when he was coming from meeting a friend. The assailants, who were riding on a motorbike, shot him six times and fled the scene.
On May 10, Kihiu Mwiri Farmers Company Ltd vice char, Peter Kuria, was shot dead at his home in Grey Stone at around 7 PM. Nothing was stolen from him. In January this year, another director, Wilfred Gichana was killed by a gang at his home.
In 2014, Charles Kamau, also a director at the same company was accosted in his home. Another director Mr. Ibrahim Mwangi was also executed when a gangster forced their way to his Kihiu Mwiri farm house.
In March 2014, Newton Muhoro, Job Mwangi and James Kimaru went missing . They were picked up from a Thika hotel by men who pretended to be police officers. They have not been found yet.
The killing started with the then company’s director, Benson Gumbi who was shot dead in a coffee plantation on his way to the company meeting.
So far no arrests or prosecutions have been made.
The CID boss, Ndegwa Muhoro, issued the summon following a meeting with the acting Land CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i, Joseph Boinnet (Inspector General of Police) and Murang’a governor Mwangi wa Iria. Some of the directors expected to appear before the CID disappeared mysteriously and the police are still looking for them.

Deputy President William Ruto had earlier ordered Lands Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to have title deeds of the company members released by September as a permanent solution to the killings. The company has 6200 members.
