“CORD leader Raila Odinga is not the president and should therefore not take over functions that are a preserve of the Head of State… Madaraka Day is a national holiday and therefore only the president is allowed to preside over such functions,” said Nkaissery as quoted by Citizen TV.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to lead the national Madaraka Day celebrations from Afraha Stadium in Nakuru county.
By organising a parallel rally at Uhuru Park on Madaraka Day, CORD will be contravening the law and they will not allowed, Nkaissery added.
He also singled out CORD co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula; and coalition’s co-chairmen senators James Orengo and Johnstone Muthama as those on the government’s watch list.
They will not be given any more room to challenge the government of the day, he said.
On the same day, Raila clarified that the opposition did not intend to undermine the government during its rally planned at Uhuru Park.
Speaking in Mombasa, Raila said the planned rally is meant for praying for truth, justice and reconciliation.
Controversy about the CORD rally is not only about its legality.
Evangelist Lucy wa Ngunjiri, of the Prayers Without Borders Ministries, has also maintained that she would be using the Uhuru Park on the same day.
