Safaricom Security Deal Has To Be Approved By Parliament First.- Kamama

Safaricom's tender to supply surveillance equipment has suffered a set back after National Assembly Energy and communication Committee directed the executive not to sign the contract for an Integrated public safety, Communication and Surveillance contract with the communication firm before it has been approved by Parliament. Chairman of the Committee and Tiaty Member of Parliament Asman Kamama said that although Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku had presented a good case to the committee they still would like to get more enlightened on the multimillion deal in order to approve it, reject it or take it to the House. The Chairman added that they are going to summon Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore, ICT Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and his Treasury counterpart Henry Rotich. Hon. Kamama said that they are doing this with the Kenyan people deeply in their hearts saying that security is a sensitive issue that should be taken with all the seriousness it deserves. He added that owing to the fact that Safaricom is a private company with majority share holders being foreigners the issue is a slippery one that requires careful handling because of issues like hacking and the like.
