Joseph Gitau Njoki the man who police claim swindled the public by posing as Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko has been arrested.
The suspect was arrested after people he had allegedly conned trooped to the senator’s offices at Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).
Njoki allegedly created a Facebook page, “Mike Sonko Foundation,” which he used to solicit funds from Kenyans.Investigators want to question other complainants and on Monday filed an affidavit against Mr Njoki asking Senior Principal Magistrate Elena Nderitu at the Milimani Law Courts to allow them to detain the suspect so they could dig deeper into the allegations against him.
According to the affidavit, Mr Njoki was arrested by officers attached to the Flying Squad who now want to work with cybercrime detectives for further investigations. The police allege that Mr Njoki swindled more than 3,000 unsuspecting people “by false pretenses by the time he was arrested. Sonko said that many swindlers have been using his name to con unsuspecting Kenyans because he is known to help the people through many projects.
