More than 100 men thronged Nambale in Busia County as early as 7am to receive "free" women for wives and a pack of goodies. A rumor had gone round that an NGO had offered to ferry lovely women from Ukambani and offer them to unmarried men willing to quit the bachelor’s club.
Bachelors thronged the venue of the ceremony after getting wind of the lifetime offer. Other offers according to the men who came from different Counties including Siaya, Bungoma and Kakamega and parts of Eastern Uganda were Sh10, 000 and a bag of maize.
The men spent the whole day waiting and many were seen yawning in hunger and anticipation but were deeply as dusk eventually caught up with them and had to leave in embarrassment. They claimed they were informed by “by government officers” to come for free women, Sh10, 000 and a sack of maize for starting out their new lives.
They alleged that all they had been told to bring were their ID cards or passports. But Nambale Deputy County Commissioner, Francis Lenyangume denied that the government was behind the sponsorship of the alleged mass marriage, adding that he was not aware of the said function.
