A shocking report has revealed the presence of up to 24 pharmaceautical drugs in domestic water in Nairobi and Kisumu. Some of the unbelievable drugs that the residents are unaware of their existence in the water they use include antibiotics, painkillers, psychiatric and ARV drugs among others
The study led by Kenneth Otieno of the Water Resources Management Authority and Ghent University in Belgium confirmed that local waste water treatment plants are not able to get rid of the residue before the water is released for consumption.
In the report, waste treatment has not been effective in areas such as Dandora in Nairobi and Nyalenda in Kisumu. Samples from shallow wells whose water is used for domestic purposes were found to heavily carry pharmaceautical drug residues.
