President Barack Obama has announced that The United States will establish a leadership centre in Kenya to train young East Africans for executive positions in business, government and civil society. Obama unveiled the initiative at the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI)
summit in Washington attended by 46 Kenyans and about 450 youth from
other African countries.
A statement from the White House has said that the center in Kenya will
offer “a robust training curriculum” developed by a public-private
partnership involving Deloitte and a New York-based financial advisory
firm.
Kenyatta University, the Kenya School of Government and Africa Nazarene
University will also play roles in the establishment of the centre.
The US Agency for International Development (USAid) is providing a total
of $38 million to establish the four regional centres in the African soil with the Kenyan one being among them. But former President Daniel Moi has questioned US President Barack Obama's Young African Leaders Initiative.
saying that he has taken a lot of interest on the mentorship
programme initiated by Obama as there were many questions on its real
intention. The former President questioned the selection criteria of the youth,
its inclusiveness and what exactly will be taught to the trainees. He added that Kenyans should be vividly told how the
beneficiaries will be chosen, the curriculum of the training and how these youth intend to ascend to leadership position.
