
Dr George Njoroge is the Kenyan American man behind the discovery of -Victrelis, a protease drug
used to treat the deadly virus that infects 150 million people
worldwide.
Dr.Njoroge who was celebrated through his induction
into the American hall of fame as the 2012 Hero of Chemistry says his contribution, however small, has tremendously
changed people’s lives across the globe, and that this remains his biggest success story.
He was also awarded the Heroes of Chemistry Award by the American
Chemical Society for the discovery, and has been listed in the “25 Most
Influential Africans in America” survey by The Sun Times.
During his recent visit to Kenya, Dr. Njoroge noted that his drug, which was approved in May 2011 by the American Food and
Drug Administration agency (FDA) as a protease inhibitor to treat
hepatitis C, has brought in more than Sh50 billion in sales in the past
two years and that it is now approved in 69 countries.
