Were The Killings In Mombasa An Ethnic Attack Against The Luos?

An eleven year old girl was among those killed after hooded gunmen stormed into the low-income Soweto area of Likoni, and shot randomly. According to eye witnesses, the gangsters, numbering between four and eight, appeared to be on a mission to kill.

A survivor of the Sunday night killings, who came face-to-face with the gang, said the men “walked majestically” and even had time for greetings before they opened fire in which 10 people sustained gunshot wounds.

The girl was among four people that were killed and Mr Aban Awuor, who is the father of Diana Achieng’said he saw four masked men arrive in his compound and did not know they would leave his little daughter dead.

Kenyan police said Monday they were hunting gunmen who killed four people in an apparent ethnic revenge attack and dropped leaflets demanding minorities leave the port city of Mombasa. The leaflets, which said the shooting was carried out in retaliation for attacks last month, appear to be a move to inflame ethnic tensions further on Kenya’s already restive coast.

Kenya faces multiple challenges, including an external Islamist threat, homegrown terrorism, religious, ethnic and tribal tensions, and bitter, long-running land disputes. The leaflets said the attackers were targeting people from the Luo community, who come from Kenya’s western region.
